5-HTP and Insomnia
Sleep Tight All Night
Do you suffer from insomnia? Do you find it difficult to fall asleep? Do you find it difficult to stay asleep throughout the night? Do you wake up in the morning feeling drowsy and weary?
If you do, you are not alone. In fact, one in three people experience insomnia -- the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep.
Can 5-HTP help? Many have reported the answer to be yes.
Here is why:
Sleep occurs in a series of cycles. A normal sleep pattern involves four to seven cycles during the course of the night. Each cycle has two main parts. The first part involves the slowing of brain activity and a drop in the level of consciousness. We do not dream during this phase. The second phase of the cycle is referred to as REM sleep and is associated with dreaming.
5-HTP helps to "smooth out" the rough spots in the sleep pattern, promoting deeper, more restful sleep.
Studies have shown that 5-HTP improves the quality of sleep by extending the REM phase significantly as well as increasing the deep sleep stages of non-REM sleep without increasing total sleep time.
This provides an advantage over many prescription sleeping pills that may actually make insomnia worse by interfering with the normal sleep pattern. These drugs tend to disrupt the REM-phase sleep and the non-REM deep sleep stages, resulting in a superficial sleep that provides little benefit. In contrast, 5-HTP enhances both REM and the deep-sleep stages by raising serotonin levels, the fuel your brain needs to regulate sleep activity.
Warning: If you have been taking a prescription sleeping pill for more than four weeks, do not stop taking the drug suddenly. Talk to your physician about ways to taper off the drug gradually to minimize or avoid potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms.
5-HTP's ability to improve sleep involves the regulation of the hormone melatonin, a hormone taken by many as a sleep aid. However, 5-HTP has been found to be more effective in promoting a good nights sleep due to the fact that it promotes the release of melatonin by the pineal gland inside the brain. Thus, taking 5-HTP tends to enhance the body's own natural cycle of melatonin production and release without causing daytime sleepiness.
The beneficial effects of 5-HTP on insomnia where first reported during the early 1970s in studies conducted by Dr. Richard J. Wyatt at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and Dr. Vincent Zarcone at Stanford University. These studies indicated that 5-HTP increases the time in REM sleep in a dose dependant manner.
The neurotransmitter serotonin is vital for helping us fall asleep and stay asleep. As an immediate precursor to serotonin, 5-HTP promotes a restful, quality sleep that allows you to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and rested, ready to take on the new day.
